Capacity: 50 MW / 104 MWh
Operating life: ~25 years
Technology: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)
Status: Commercial Operations
COD: December 2025
Overview
Project Helios is one of Japan's earliest utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developments, operational since December 2025 in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. With a capacity of 50 MW / 104 MWh, Helios plays a pioneering role in contributing to grid stability by absorbing excess electricity during peak generation hours and enhancing renewables integration in the region. The project represents a major milestone in Japan's energy transition and demonstrates the critical role of energy storage in supporting the country's renewable energy goals.
Development
Manoa Energy acquired the Helios site at a pre-RTB stage and has led the project through all critical development milestones:
• Secured all construction and grid connection permits
• Contracted EPC services and procured the full BESS system
• Coordinated with utilities, neighboring infrastructure projects, local community and key stakeholders
• Managed grid impact studies and permitting of the self-transmission line
• Oversaw full construction of the site, including delivery and installation of battery units
Community Engagement
As part of our engagement efforts with the local community surrounding the project, Manoa Energy actively sought input from residents. Lighting was installed at the public bus stop located close to the project entrance in response to a concern highlighted by residents.
Construction Management
Beyond development, Manoa Energy is serving as the construction manager, overseeing execution up to commercial operation. Helios is a flagship example of Manoa’s end-to-end development approach—from acquisition and permitting to BESS procurement and construction oversight.
