Overview
Project Shibushi is a high-voltage, utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Shibushi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The project has an installed power capacity of 2 MW with a 4-hour energy duration, providing flexible, grid-connected storage to support system stability, and renewable usage in the Kyushu region. Currently under construction, Project Shibushi represents an important step in the deployment of large-scale energy storage infrastructure supporting Japan’s evolving electricity market, and renewable energy transition.
Development
Manoa Energy originated the Shibushi Project and has continued to lead the project through all critical development milestones, including:
• Land acquisition
• Permitting
• Utility Interconnection agreements
• Execution of the EPC contract and progression into the construction phase
• Aggregator contracting in preparation for participation in Japan’s electricity markets
• Negotiation of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) scope and commercial terms to support long-term operational performance
• Project delivery management and stakeholder coordination through to commercial operation
Construction Management
Beyond development, Manoa Energy is serving as the construction manager, overseeing execution up to commercial operation. Shibushi is a flagship example of Manoa’s end-to-end development approach—from acquisition and permitting to BESS procurement and construction oversight.
